Why October is Kashmir's Most Spectacular Month
If you've only heard about Kashmir in summer, you're missing the most dramatic version of the Valley. October arrives after the monsoon has cleaned the air of dust and haze. The light in October is different — golden, lower in the sky, casting long shadows over the Mughal gardens and Dal Lake. And then there is the chinar.
The chinar tree — Platanus orientalis — is Kashmir's most iconic plant. Planted by Mughal emperors across the Valley's gardens, these trees turn from green to gold to deep crimson through October. The largest specimens are in Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, and in October the gardens are genuinely extraordinary. This is what people mean when they say Kashmir is heaven.
Add to this the saffron harvest at Pampore, 10 km from Srinagar. From mid-October to early November, the fields bloom purple with crocus flowers — this is the source of Kashmir's famous saffron, harvested by hand at dawn. It's one of the most unusual agricultural spectacles in India and almost nobody visits it.
October Weather in Kashmir
October days are warm and bright — 16-20°C at noon. Evenings cool quickly after 5pm (10-12°C). Mornings are crisp and clear — best for photography and outdoor activities. Rain is rare but pack a light layer for evenings. High passes like Sonamarg and Zojila close in late October as snowfall begins at altitude.

October is one of the best-value windows in Kashmir. The crowds thin significantly after mid-September, and hotels respond with lower rates. This is not a marginal difference — it is genuinely significant.

What to Do in Kashmir in October
The Mughal garden of Nishat Bagh has Kashmir's oldest and largest chinar trees. In October they turn gold and deep red. The garden on a clear October afternoon, with Zabarwan Hills behind and Dal Lake below, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in India.
Drive 20 minutes from Srinagar to Pampore — the saffron capital of Asia. Mid-October to early November, the fields bloom purple with crocus flowers harvested by hand each dawn. Entry is free and farmers are generally welcoming to respectful visitors.
October mornings on Dal Lake are extraordinarily still and clear. The Zabarwan Hills reflect in the water, the houseboats are quiet. A 6am shikara ride in October light is one of the most memorable hours you can spend in Kashmir.
The Lidder Valley around Pahalgam is stunning in October. Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari are at their most beautiful with autumn colour. River water is clear and cold. Quieter than summer with better photography.
Gulmarg gets its first snowfall of the season in October — usually mid to late October. The gondola to Kongdori operates on most days. This is when Gulmarg offers two experiences in one: green valley lower, snow above.
