It is only 42 km from Srinagar, you can visit it as a half-day trip, and it is one of the most beautiful meadows in all of Kashmir. Most tourists have never heard of it. That is exactly what makes it worth going.
Doodhpathri -- literally "Valley of Milk" in Kashmiri -- sits at 2,730 metres in the Budgam district, in a vast natural amphitheatre of alpine meadows, glacial streams and pine-fringed hills. The name comes from the white, milk-like appearance of the fast-flowing glacial streams that cross the meadow. On a clear day, the water genuinely looks like milk rushing over smooth stones. It is one of those things you need to see in person to believe.
Unlike Gulmarg, which can feel crowded during peak season, and Sonamarg, which is a 4-hour drive from the city, Doodhpathri remains refreshingly quiet, genuinely beautiful, and easy to reach. It is the kind of place that makes you wonder why more people do not visit -- and then secretly hope they never do.

When to Visit Doodhpathri
Doodhpathri is accessible from April through October, but each part of the season has a distinctly different character. Here is what to expect month by month so you can plan around what matters most to you.
If you are visiting Kashmir in summer and have a free half-day, Doodhpathri is probably the best use of that time. Close enough to Srinagar that you can leave after a late breakfast, spend 3 to 4 hours at the meadow, and be back in time for dinner on the houseboat. The drive alone is worth it.
How Doodhpathri Compares to Gulmarg and Sonamarg
Gulmarg is more developed, has the gondola, and is better known internationally — but it is also busier and more expensive. Sonamarg is larger and more dramatic in terms of mountain scenery, but it is 4 hours from Srinagar and works better as an overnight stop than a quick visit.
Doodhpathri occupies a sweet spot: close to Srinagar, genuinely beautiful, free to enter, and still quiet enough that you can have stretches of the meadow entirely to yourself. If you are adding just one offbeat stop to a standard Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam itinerary, Doodhpathri is the easiest and most rewarding addition you can make.
Pairing Doodhpathri with Yusmarg — The Budgam Day
Both Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are in Budgam district, both are within 50 km of Srinagar, and neither requires a permit. This makes them a natural same-day pair for anyone who wants to see the offbeat side of Kashmir without a long drive or overnight stay.
The practical combination: start with Yusmarg in the morning (it is quieter earlier in the day), drive to Doodhpathri in the afternoon. Both take 1.5 hours from Srinagar but they are not on the same road, so plan the routing with your driver in advance. Total driving on a Yusmarg-Doodhpathri day runs to roughly 5 to 6 hours including both stops — a full day, comfortable if you leave by 8 AM.
What Doodhpathri is not: it is not a high-altitude mountain destination like Sonamarg or Gulmarg's upper gondola, it does not have trekking routes that will challenge experienced hikers, and it does not offer the dramatic glacial scenery of Thajiwas or Apharwat. It is a meadow, and a very beautiful one. Set that as your expectation and you will not be disappointed.
