Why Mumbai Travellers Come to Kashmir
Mumbai people work hard. The city never fully stops -- not at midnight, not on weekends, not even during the monsoon. That is part of what makes it one of the world\'s great cities. It is also part of what makes a proper break so necessary. Kashmir does. The silence of Dal Lake at dawn is the most effective detox we know.
We host a significant number of Mumbai guests every year -- financial professionals, media and entertainment people, business owners, families from South Mumbai, and working couples from the suburbs. The one thing they consistently say when they arrive in Kashmir is that they forgot what quiet actually felt like. We hear this from the Bandra crowd and from the Thane crowd alike.
This guide covers everything a Mumbai traveller needs to plan the trip: flights, seasons, itineraries, and what to pack when you\'re coming from a coastal city to a mountain valley.
Flights from Mumbai (BOM) to Srinagar (SXR)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) connects to Srinagar Airport (SXR) primarily through Delhi. IndiGo and Air India are the main carriers. Total journey time is typically 3 to 4 hours including the Delhi connection. Some seasonal schedules offer direct BOM-SXR service, which cuts travel time significantly.
| Airline | Route | Duration | Return Fare (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | BOM - DEL - SXR | 3 hrs 30 min | 5,500 to 11,000 |
| Air India | BOM - DEL - SXR | 3 hrs 45 min | 6,000 to 13,000 |
| Direct (Seasonal) | BOM - SXR direct | 2 hrs 30 min | 4,500 to 9,000 |
Mumbai booking tip: A 6 AM flight from BOM connecting in Delhi lands in Srinagar before noon. You check into a houseboat for lunch. That same day you can be on Dal Lake watching the sun lower behind the Zabarwan Range. Book 4 to 6 weeks out for best fares. Weekend departures cost 20 to 30 percent more than weekday flights.

Travel Tips Specific to Mumbai Guests
Mumbai is coastal and relatively flat. Kashmir is mountainous. A few things to keep in mind when you make this transition.
- The altitude in Gulmarg (2,730m) is significantly higher than Srinagar (1,585m). Take the first day gently -- do not rush straight to high altitudes on arrival
- Mumbai humidity does not prepare you for Kashmir dryness. Carry good moisturiser and drink water consistently throughout the day
- Layering is essential even in summer. A Juhu morning and a Gulmarg morning are very different environments
- If travelling during Mumbai rains (July-August), note that Kashmir has its own brief rainy season -- plan around it or embrace the dramatic landscape
- Kashmiri food is hearty and warming -- a significant shift from the coastal diet. Most guests find they love it; just pace yourself with rich dishes like Rogan Josh and Gushtaba
