Pahalgam, Kashmir

Pahalgam is the place where Kashmir takes a deep breath. If Srinagar is the cultural heartbeat of the valley, and Gulmarg is the adrenaline, Pahalgam is where everything slows down. The air is cooler here. The pine trees are taller. And the sound of the Lidder River running alongside the town is something you hear in your sleep for days after you leave.

We at Trivilio think of Pahalgam as our quiet favourite. It is not the flashiest destination in Kashmir, but it might be the most complete one. At 2,130 metres, in the Anantnag district, it sits in a wide river valley surrounded by mountains that never seem to end. Shepherds still bring their flocks through these meadows in summer, just as they have done for centuries. The name itself means Valley of Shepherds, and when you are here, you understand why.

Our guide Mushtaq grew up in Pahalgam. His family has lived here for generations, and he knows every trail, every stream crossing, every spot where the light hits the valley just right. When he takes guests to Betaab Valley early in the morning, before the parking lot fills up, he always says the same thing: this is what Kashmir looked like before the rest of the world found it. And he is right. That first view of Betaab, with the river cutting through a meadow framed by snow-capped peaks, is something no photograph fully captures.

The drive from Srinagar takes about two and a half hours, passing through the saffron fields of Pampore and the old town of Anantnag. Jamsheed, our driver, always stops at a particular chai stall near Anantnag where the bread is baked fresh in a tandoor. It is one of those small things that make a Trivilio trip feel different from just getting in a car and going.

Betaab Valley

Named after the 1983 Bollywood film that was shot here, Betaab Valley is one of Kashmir's most iconic landscapes. But forget the film connection. What makes Betaab extraordinary is the sheer scale of it, a wide, flat meadow sitting between steep, forested mountains, with a river winding through the centre. In spring, the meadow is carpeted with wildflowers. In early winter, the first snow dusts the surrounding peaks while the valley floor is still green. It is about 15 kilometres from Pahalgam town, and our team always recommends visiting early morning when the valley is at its quietest and the light is soft.

Our team tip: Most visitors spend 20 minutes at the main viewpoint and leave. Mushtaq takes our guests on a 45-minute walk along the river trail that starts behind the main parking area. You will see the valley from angles that most tourists never find, and there is a spot about halfway along where the river pools into a shallow, crystal-clear basin that is perfect for photographs.

Aru Valley

If Betaab Valley is the famous one, Aru is the quiet, beautiful sister. Eleven kilometres from Pahalgam, reached by a narrow road that winds through pine forest, Aru feels like the end of the world in the best possible way. This is the base camp for treks to Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Lake, two of the most stunning alpine destinations in all of the Himalayas. But even if you are not a trekker, just being in Aru for a few hours is enough. The meadows here are wide and open, the mountains are close, and there is a peacefulness that is hard to find anywhere else.

Mushtaq always recommends spending at least half a day in Aru. There is a small wooden bridge over the stream that makes for a wonderful afternoon walk, and the chai stalls at the far end of the valley serve fresh noon chai with local bread. It is simple, but it is one of those moments that stays with you.

Baisaran Meadow

Locals call Baisaran the Mini Switzerland of India, and while that comparison is used too freely in Kashmir, here it actually fits. Baisaran is a high alpine meadow accessible only by horse ride from Pahalgam town. The ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes through dense pine forest, climbing steadily, and when you emerge at the top, the meadow opens up with views of snow-capped peaks in every direction. It is not a place you can drive to, and that is exactly what makes it special. Our team arranges the horse rides with local families who have been doing this for decades and know every safe path.

River Rafting on the Lidder

The Lidder River flows right through Pahalgam, and from April through June, when the snowmelt feeds it, the rapids are strong enough for genuine white-water rafting. The Grade 2 and Grade 3 rapids are exciting but safe, suitable for first-timers and families with older children. The run takes about an hour and covers roughly 3 kilometres through a forested gorge. It is one of the most exhilarating things you can do in Kashmir, and our team books it with certified operators who provide full safety gear and experienced guides.

Walking Along the Lidder

Not everything needs to be an activity. One of the most lovely things you can do in Pahalgam is simply walk along the banks of the Lidder River. The water is so clear you can see every stone on the riverbed. There are sections near the town where flat rocks jut out over the water, and sitting there in the afternoon, watching the current and listening to nothing but the river and the wind in the pines, is genuinely restorative. Mushtaq says this is the best free therapy in Kashmir. We agree.

Pahalgam has a good range of hotels and lodges. The Pahalgam Hotel, run by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism, has a wonderful riverside location and solid rooms. Hotel Heevan Pahalgam is a comfortable four-star option right in town. For something more intimate, there are pine-log cottages near Aru Valley that feel like you are staying inside a postcard. Our team personally inspects every property we recommend, and Tariq visits each one at the start of every season to make sure standards have not slipped.

Our team tip: Stay at least two nights, three if you can. Pahalgam rewards slow travel. One day for Betaab and Aru, one day for Baisaran or river rafting, and a third day to simply sit by the Lidder, drink kahwa, and watch the mountains. Rushing through Pahalgam defeats the entire point of coming here.
