Kashmir does not have a bad season — it has different seasons, each perfect for a different kind of traveller. The challenge is not whether to visit, but when to visit for what you want. Do you want to ski knee-deep powder in Gulmarg? Or photograph Asia's largest tulip garden in bloom? Or float on a shikara under crisp autumn skies?
At Trivilio, based in Srinagar since 2014, we have helped over 12,000 travellers plan their Kashmir trips across every month of the year. This guide is built from real on-the-ground experience, not aggregated data — with exact dates, local insider tips and honest month-by-month assessments.
January & February — Deep Winter (Snow Season)
💡 Insider tip: Book Gulmarg gondola tickets at least 3 days in advance in January — they sell out fast. Our team can pre-book them for you.
March & April — Spring Awakening (Tulip Season)
💡 The Tulip Festival exact dates vary year to year by 1–2 weeks based on spring temperatures. Contact Trivilio for confirmed 2026 bloom dates.
May & June — Early Summer (Sweet Spot)
May and June are arguably the best months for a first-time visitor. The weather is warm but not hot (15°C–28°C), the meadows are electric green, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are in full bloom, and tourist crowds are moderate. This is peak season for families and couples.
Gondola in Gulmarg still shows snow at Phase 2. The shikara rides on Dal Lake are spectacular at dawn. Mughal Gardens (Shalimar, Nishat, Chashme Shahi) are at their most colourful.
July & August — Monsoon Summer
Kashmir receives far less rain than the rest of India during monsoon — it lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. July and August are warm (22°C–32°C in Srinagar) and largely dry. This is also the period of Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
The risk: occasional cloudy skies can obscure mountain views. Roads to high-altitude spots like Gurez Valley or the Great Lakes Trek starting from Sonamarg may face brief closures after heavy rains. However, for most mainstream tourists, August is perfectly fine.
September & October — Autumn Gold (Hidden Best Season)
Many seasoned travellers call September–October Kashmir's best-kept secret. The summer crowds are gone, prices drop 20–30%, the skies are brilliantly clear, and the Chinar trees begin their famous colour transformation in October.
This is the best season for photography, trekking (Great Lakes Trek, Tarsar Marsar) and road trips. Dal Lake is mirror-calm. The air is crisp and clean. Hotel availability is excellent.
💡 October is Trivilio's personal favourite month. If you have flexibility, choose October — fewer crowds, best light, and the Chinar trees turn the Valley gold.
November & December — Pre-Winter
November sees the Valley transitioning. Temperatures drop sharply (0°C–12°C), most Mughal Gardens close, but the snowfall begins on higher peaks. December brings heavy snowfall to Gulmarg from the 10th–15th onwards, opening the ski season.
Christmas and New Year in Gulmarg has become increasingly popular. Book well in advance — hotels fill up from December 20 onwards.
