December Kashmir — What Actually Happens
December is when Kashmir stops being a summer hill station and becomes something else entirely. The first snowfall at Gulmarg typically arrives in November and by December the upper valley is fully white. Srinagar itself receives sporadic snow — usually in the second or third week of December, heavier toward late December and January.
Dal Lake in December mornings is covered in thick mist. Houseboats sit silent in the fog. Shikara men row through near-zero visibility. By mid-morning the mist lifts and you get extraordinary clear winter light — the kind that makes every photograph look polished. This is not a crowd-pleasing Kashmir. It is the genuine, undiluted version.
And then there's Gulmarg. At 2,690m, Gulmarg receives some of the heaviest snowfall of any ski resort in Asia — 5–8 metres over winter. The gondola to Kongdori (Phase 1, 2,690m) and Apharwat Peak (Phase 2, 3,980m) gives access to genuine Himalayan skiing. The runs are wide, the powder is deep, and in December the season is just starting — the snow is fresh and most of the infrastructure is running again after summer.
December Weather in Kashmir
Important: Temperature varies significantly by location and elevation. Srinagar is around 0–8°C. Gulmarg is -10 to -2°C. Pahalgam is -5 to 5°C. Pack serious winter clothing — thermal base layers, heavy jacket, waterproof shoes, gloves and a warm hat. Houseboats have bukhari (traditional wood stove heating) which keeps interiors very warm.
What to Do in Kashmir in December
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve becomes one of Asia's best ski destinations in winter. The gondola to Apharwat Peak at 3,980m gives access to long, wide runs with Himalayan powder snow. Ski and snowboard rental available at base. Lessons from certified instructors.
Even if you don't ski, the gondola ride over a completely snow-covered Gulmarg valley is spectacular. Phase 2 takes you to 3,980m where the views of the Himalayan range — including Nanga Parbat at 8,126m — are extraordinary on clear December days.
Snowmobiles operate from Gulmarg village into the surrounding snow fields. A 20-minute snowmobile ride costs around ₹1,200–₹1,500. For groups this is often the favourite memory of the trip.
December mornings on Dal Lake are unlike any other season. The lake is often covered in thick white mist at 6–7am. Shikara men row through near-zero visibility. By 9am the mist lifts to reveal a completely still, mirrorlike lake with snow on the surrounding hills.
Kashmir is one of India's most unusual Christmas destinations. Houseboats are decorated, hotels host events, and Gulmarg becomes particularly festive. Midnight New Year on a Dal Lake houseboat with snow falling outside is a deeply specific kind of magic.
