Why April is Kashmir's Favourite Spring Month
April is when Kashmir wakes up. The snow line retreats up the mountains, and below it everything blooms simultaneously — as if the Valley has been holding its breath since November and exhales all at once. Tulips, cherry blossoms, almond flowers, mustard yellow, and the fresh green of the chinar. It happens over a window of about three weeks and it is extraordinary.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden on the foothills of Zabarwan — the largest tulip garden in Asia — opens in early April. Over 1.5 million tulips in 60+ varieties, cascading down the hillside above Dal Lake, with snow-capped peaks behind. Photography here on a clear April morning is among the most dramatic possible in India.
The practical situation: April is post-winter and pre-peak summer. Flights and hotels are available and not overpriced. Weather is pleasant and predictable. The one caveat: the tulip window is 3–4 weeks and variable year to year — we always advise booking flexibly or confirming peak bloom dates closer to travel.
April Weather in Kashmir
April days are pleasant — perfect for outdoor activities and photography. Mornings are cool (8-10°C), afternoons warm up to 18-20°C. Light rain is possible (3-5 rain days in the month). Pack a light rain jacket and wear layers. Evenings need a warm jacket. Snow is rare at Srinagar level but Gulmarg and high passes may still have snow — which adds to the scenery.
Kashmir Tulip Festival 2026 — What to Know
The Kashmir Tulip Festival is typically held in the first or second week of April, timed around peak bloom. The festival includes cultural programs, performances and open access to the garden. Exact dates are announced by the J&K Government in late February each year.
What Blooms in April — Kashmir Spring Calendar
The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden has 60+ varieties of tulips. Peak bloom depends on temperature but is typically first 2 weeks of April. Over 1.5 million bulbs planted across the hillside terraces.
Cherry trees line the Boulevard Road around Dal Lake and many neighbourhood streets. White and pale pink blossoms against the blue lake — a brief, beautiful window of about 10 days.
Almond orchards across the Valley bloom early — some begin in late February in mild years. The almond blossom festival at Badamwari Garden in Srinagar celebrates this. One of the first signs of spring.

The ancient chinar trees get their fresh spring leaves in April — bright lime green, unfurling against blue skies. Different from their autumn colour but equally beautiful in its own way.
