Kashmir, Without Compromise

Your private chauffeur is waiting at Srinagar Airport. The car is clean, air-conditioned, and stocked with water and snacks for the drive. You reach Dal Lake in about twenty minutes. Your heritage houseboat is one of the finest on the lake. The woodwork is all hand-carved walnut and cedar, the furniture is antique, and the bedroom has a view of the Zabarwan mountains through silk curtains. The houseboat staff greet you with kahwa tea, a platter of dry fruits, and a welcome hamper that includes Kashmiri saffron, almonds, and walnuts. Take the afternoon to rest. Sit on the upper deck with a book. Watch the shikaras drift past. In the evening, a private Shikara ride takes you through the quieter channels of Dal Lake as the sun sets. Dinner is served on the houseboat. The cook has been with this boat for twenty years. He knows what he is doing. Tonight, it is Kashmiri rogan josh, nadru yakhni, and steamed rice. You eat on the deck if the weather allows.

Your private guide arrives at nine. He is not a script reader. He is someone who grew up in Srinagar and studied its history because he loves it. You visit the Mughal Gardens before the crowds arrive. Nishat Bagh first. Twelve terraces stepping down toward Dal Lake, built in 1633. The symmetry is stunning. The fountains still work. Chinar trees planted four hundred years ago still give shade. Then Shalimar Bagh, built by Emperor Jahangir for his wife. The water channels, the black marble pavilion, the view of the lake from the highest terrace. Your guide tells you stories the plaques do not mention. Chashme Shahi is last. Small, intimate, with a natural spring that people have been drinking from for centuries. After the gardens, the old city. Jama Masjid, with its 370 wooden pillars, each carved from a single deodar trunk. Shah-i-Hamdan shrine, covered in papier-mache art so intricate you could study it for an hour. The afternoon is yours. A Shikara ride through the floating gardens of Dal Lake, where vegetables grow on mats of woven water hyacinth, is arranged if you want it. Evening at leisure. High tea at the resort.

The drive to Gulmarg takes ninety minutes. Your guide sits with you and points out things along the way: the apple orchards, the rice paddies being planted, a bakery in Tangmarg that makes the best girda bread in the Valley. Gulmarg is at 2,650 metres. When the road ends and the meadow opens up, the scale of it is hard to process. It is a mile-wide bowl of green (or white, in winter) surrounded by the Pir Panjal range. The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable cars in the world. Your tickets for Phase 1 and Phase 2 are pre-booked, so there is no queue. Phase 1 takes you to 3,980 metres. The view includes Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain on earth. Phase 2 takes you to 4,267 metres, where the landscape is snow and rock and nothing else. The silence at the top is complete. In winter, skiing and snowboarding are available with certified instructors. In summer, you walk through alpine meadows scattered with wildflowers. Lunch is at a restaurant our guide personally recommends. You return to Srinagar and check into your five-star resort. The rooms have heated floors, rainfall showers, and views of the mountains. High tea is served in the lounge.

The drive to Pahalgam takes about two and a half hours. The route follows the Lidder River and passes through some of the most beautiful countryside in Kashmir. Your guide arranges the itinerary for the day based on your pace and preferences. Betaab Valley is usually the first stop. The meadow sits at the base of a steep valley, with a river running through it and pine trees climbing the slopes on both sides. Then Aru Valley, about twelve kilometres further up. This is quieter, more remote. Gujjar nomads camp here in summer with their livestock. The grass is ankle-deep and the river runs cold and clear. Chandanwari is the farthest point you can drive. The road climbs through dense forest and ends at a snowfield. It is the starting point of the Amarnath pilgrimage, and even outside the pilgrimage season, the landscape is powerful. We arrange a riverside picnic lunch. No plastic chairs and paper plates. A proper setup with a blanket, cushions, and food prepared by a local cook. You eat by the river, surrounded by pine forest. The drive back to Srinagar in the evening light is quietly spectacular.

Sonamarg is the most dramatic landscape on this trip. The drive from Srinagar follows the Sindh River through a narrow valley that gets more beautiful with every kilometre. The mountains press in from both sides. Small wooden villages appear and disappear. Waterfalls cut down the rock face. When you arrive, the name explains itself. Sonamarg means "meadow of gold." In summer, the grasslands have a golden cast. In winter, everything is white. Thajiwas Glacier is the main attraction. You can walk to it or take a pony. The glacier sits in a granite bowl, and the air is cold and clean even in July. Zero Point, further up the valley, is accessible by road in summer. The views of the surrounding peaks from there are among the best in Kashmir. We arrange a picnic lunch by the Sindh River. The setting is extraordinary. Your guide picks the spot based on which section of the river is most beautiful that day. The return drive to Srinagar in the afternoon gives you the same views in reverse, with different light. Farewell dinner at the resort tonight. The chef prepares a multi-course Wazwan feast. This is Kashmir's most elaborate meal tradition, and it is served with ceremony.

No early alarm. No packed schedule. Today is about doing whatever you feel like. If you want to shop, our guide takes you to the Boulevard stretch near Dal Lake. This is where the best Pashmina shops, saffron sellers, and handicraft galleries are. He knows which stores are genuine, which ones overcharge, and where to find the pieces you will not see in tourist markets. Kashmiri walnut-wood carvings, papier-mache, copper samovars, hand-knotted silk carpets, and chain-stitch embroidery are all worth looking at. If you want a spa day, the resort has a full-service wellness centre. Deep tissue massage, aromatherapy, and traditional hammam treatments are available. If you want to do nothing at all, the resort has gardens, a library, and mountain views from every window. That is a perfectly good day. In the evening, a final Wazwan dinner is arranged on the houseboat. Candles on the deck. The mountains reflected in the lake. You return to the resort for your last night.

Breakfast at the resort. Take your time. Check-out is flexible, and your driver leaves whenever you are ready. The ride to the airport takes about twenty minutes. Seven days in Kashmir always feels both long and not long enough. You will have seen the Mughal gardens without the crowds, ridden the highest gondola in Asia, eaten riverside picnics in valleys that most tourists never reach, and stayed in some of the finest properties in the Valley.
