We get asked this one more than almost anything else: "If I have seven days in Kashmir, where should I go and what should I do?" After planning thousands of week-long trips across the Valley, our team has a pretty clear answer. Seven days is the sweet spot for a first visit. It gives you enough time to properly experience three essential destinations -- Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam -- without feeling rushed, and still leaves room for a day trip to Sonamarg or a quiet afternoon wandering through Srinagar\'s Old City lanes.
What we have put together below are two complete day-by-day itineraries that our team has refined over years of real trips. The Budget version runs around 22,000 to 28,000 per person (twin sharing, excluding flights). The Premium version lands between 55,000 and 70,000 per person. Both follow the same proven route -- the difference is in the accommodation, the dining experiences, and the little extras that turn a good trip into something truly memorable.
We should mention: these are starting points, not rigid schedules. Every traveller we work with gets a version tailored to their interests, pace, and travel dates. If you want to swap a Gulmarg overnight for an extra day in Pahalgam, or add a stop at Doodhpathri, our team can adjust anything. That flexibility is one of the things people tell us they appreciate most about travelling with us.
Budget Itinerary -- Around 25,000/person (Excl. Flights)
This is the itinerary we recommend for travellers who want to experience everything Kashmir has to offer without overspending. The accommodation is clean and comfortable -- family-run guesthouses and standard hotels rather than luxury resorts -- and the food is authentic local cuisine rather than fine dining. You still see all the same places, take all the same drives, and come home with the same photographs. The difference is entirely in where you sleep and eat, not in what you experience.
1Day 1 -- Arrival + Srinagar
You land at Srinagar Airport and your driver is already there with a nameplate. Check into your hotel, take a couple of hours to unwind, and then head out for an evening shikara ride on Dal Lake. The light at that hour is something else entirely -- soft gold across the water, the Zabarwan hills turning purple behind the houseboats. After the ride, walk through Lal Chowk and try your first proper Wazwan meal at a local restaurant. Do not rush. Kashmir rewards people who slow down.
2Day 2 -- Srinagar City
A full day exploring the city. Start with the Mughal Gardens -- Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi are all within easy driving distance. Then head into the Old City: walk through the wooden lanes near Jama Masjid, visit the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine, and stop at Polo View Market for pashmina shopping. Spend the evening at Nehru Park on the lakeside. Our team often tells guests that Srinagar itself deserves two full days, and most people agree by the end.
3Day 3 -- Gulmarg Day Trip
Leave early for Gulmarg -- the drive takes about an hour and a half and the road itself is beautiful, winding through rice paddies and apple orchards. Once there, take the Gondola Phase 1 up to 3,980 metres. If the weather is clear, the views from the top are genuinely breathtaking. Spend a couple of hours walking the meadows or taking a short horse ride, then head back to Srinagar for the night. A day trip works well on a budget because Gulmarg hotels tend to be pricier.
4Day 4 -- Pahalgam
The drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam takes about two and a half hours, passing through saffron fields near Pampore and the ancient Avantipur temple ruins. Check into your hotel, then head straight to Betaab Valley. The valley earned its name from a Bollywood film, but it earned its reputation from the landscape -- wide, green, and surrounded by pine-covered mountains. In the evening, walk along the Lidder River. The sound of the water is the best sleep aid you will find anywhere.
5Day 5 -- Pahalgam Exploration
A second day in Pahalgam lets you explore without hurrying. Drive to Aru Valley, about 15 kilometres from the town centre, where the meadows stretch wide and the treeline feels close enough to touch. If the season permits, continue to Chandanwari -- the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage and a stunning spot in its own right. Spend the afternoon in the local market picking up Kashmiri shawls, saffron, or dried fruits. The prices here are often better than in Srinagar.
6Day 6 -- Sonamarg Day Trip
Drive from Pahalgam back through Srinagar and onward to Sonamarg -- the Meadow of Gold. The total drive is about three hours. Sonamarg sits at the edge of the Kashmir Valley, where the landscape shifts from green meadows to rugged glacial terrain. Walk up to Thajiwas Glacier (a gentle trek, nothing strenuous), take in the Sind River valley, and enjoy a packed lunch in the meadows. Return to Srinagar for the night. Many of our guests say Sonamarg is their single favourite spot.
7Day 7 -- Departure
If your flight is in the afternoon, spend the morning on a final shikara ride or enjoy breakfast on a houseboat -- even budget travellers can arrange a one-morning houseboat breakfast for a couple of hundred rupees. Do any last-minute shopping, then transfer to Srinagar Airport. Most of our guests leave saying a week was not enough. We hear that a lot.
Premium Itinerary -- 60,000+/person
This is the itinerary for travellers who want Kashmir at its most immersive and comfortable. The route is similar, but the experience is fundamentally different. You stay on a heritage houseboat with hand-carved walnut interiors instead of a standard hotel room. You dine on a private Wazwan feast arranged under the stars rather than at a restaurant. Your guide takes you to artisan workshops and hidden viewpoints that most visitors never see. This is Kashmir the way our team experiences it when they have guests they really want to impress.
1Day 1 -- Arrival + Houseboat
A private car meets you at the airport and drives you straight to a Premium Category houseboat on Dal Lake. The houseboat itself is an experience -- carved walnut ceilings, embroidered curtains, a sundeck overlooking the water. After settling in, take a sunset shikara ride with Kahwa served on the boat. Dinner is a candlelit Wazwan affair arranged on the houseboat deck. You will understand within hours why people fall in love with this place.
2Day 2 -- Srinagar Heritage
A private car with a knowledgeable guide takes you through Srinagar at a leisurely pace. The Mughal Gardens in the morning -- Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh -- followed by lunch at a heritage restaurant overlooking the lake. In the afternoon, visit Badamwari (the almond grove, if you are visiting in spring) and then spend time at a Kashmiri artisan studio watching papier-mache and pashmina craftsmen at work. This is the kind of day that makes you understand why Srinagar was once considered the cultural jewel of Central Asia.
3Day 3 -- Gulmarg (Overnight)
Drive to Gulmarg and check into a luxury mountain resort. The premium itinerary includes an overnight stay here, which means you get to experience Gulmarg at its quietest -- early morning and late evening, when the day-trippers have left and the meadow feels like it belongs to you alone. Take the Gondola to both Phase 1 and Phase 2 (4,267 metres). If it is winter, a private ski lesson or snowshoe guide is arranged. Evening bonfire with stories from your guide.
4Day 4 -- Gulmarg + Pahalgam
A morning meadow trek in Gulmarg before the crowds arrive, then drive to Pahalgam. Check into a riverside cottage -- the sound of the Lidder River outside your window is worth the trip alone. In the late afternoon, head to Betaab Valley for sunset. The light at that hour paints the mountains in shades of copper and violet that you will not quite believe are real.
5Day 5 -- Pahalgam Premium
This is where the premium itinerary really separates itself. A private Lidder River rafting session in the morning, followed by a fly fishing experience on a quiet stretch of the river. If you are adventurous, this can be swapped for Day 1 of the Tarsar Marsar Trek. The evening is something we are particularly proud of: dinner at a local Kashmiri home, cooked by a family who has been welcoming our guests for years. It is authentic, warm, and nothing like a restaurant.
6Day 6 -- Sonamarg + Return
The Sonamarg glacier excursion with a packed gourmet lunch -- properly good food, not roadside sandwiches. The drive back to Srinagar passes through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Valley. Your final night is back on the houseboat, this time with a farewell Kahwa ceremony and time to simply sit on the deck and watch the lake turn silver in the moonlight.
7Day 7 -- Departure
Private airport transfer with artisan gifts arranged for you to take home -- hand-picked by our team based on what you mentioned enjoying during the trip. We also put together personalised recommendations for a return visit, because almost everyone who does the premium itinerary starts talking about coming back before they have even left.
Packing Essentials for 7 Days
What you pack depends entirely on when you visit, and the difference between seasons in Kashmir is dramatic. For summer trips (June through September), bring light layers, a warm fleece for evenings at higher altitudes, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Even in summer, Gulmarg will be noticeably cooler than Srinagar, so a light jacket is essential for the Gondola ride.
For winter visits (December through March), you need proper cold-weather gear. A heavy winter jacket, thermal innerwear, waterproof boots, gloves, and a warm hat are non-negotiable. The temperature in Gulmarg can drop to minus 15 degrees Celsius, and even Srinagar regularly sees sub-zero nights. Our team can send you a detailed packing list based on your specific travel dates -- just ask when you get in touch.
One thing our team always tells guests: bring a good power bank. Srinagar and the main towns have reliable electricity, but on long drives through the mountains, your phone will drain faster from the cold and the GPS. A 20,000 mAh power bank has saved more than a few of our guests from a dead-phone situation on the road to Sonamarg.
