Delhi Has the Best Starting Position for Kashmir
If you are in Delhi and you want to reach Kashmir, you are already in the most advantageous position of anyone in India. One hour by air. The most flights of any Indian city to Srinagar. A direct road that has been driven by generations of travellers. And a train to Jammu that sets up one of the most spectacular overland journeys in the subcontinent.
I am Aamir, founder of Trivilio. I grew up in Kashmir, spent a decade in Bangalore in learning and development consulting, and came home to build a travel company that does justice to the valley. We host hundreds of Delhi guests every year -- families, honeymooners, solo travellers, corporate groups. Delhi guests are often the most prepared: they know how close Kashmir is, and they want to make the most of that proximity.
This guide covers every way to get from Delhi to Kashmir, with honest time estimates, costs, and my personal recommendations based on what actually works for the travellers I host.
Option 1: Fly from Delhi (DEL) to Srinagar (SXR) — 1 Hour, Most Popular
The flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi to Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar is one of the most popular domestic routes in India, particularly from May through October. The journey takes approximately one hour in the air. On a clear day, the view of the Pir Panjal range as you approach Srinagar is reason enough to sit by the window.
IndiGo and Air India operate the largest number of daily flights on this route. Vistara (now merged into Air India) historically served the route as well. SpiceJet operates seasonally. On peak summer days in June and July, you may find ten or more departures between 5 AM and 9 PM. Delhi has genuinely good connectivity to Srinagar.
| Airline | Route | Duration | Return Fare (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | DEL - SXR (Direct) | 1 hr 05 min | 3,000 to 7,000 |
| Air India | DEL - SXR (Direct) | 1 hr 10 min | 4,500 to 8,000 |
| SpiceJet | DEL - SXR (Seasonal) | 1 hr 05 min | 3,500 to 7,500 |
Flight booking tips: Book 3 to 6 weeks ahead for the best fares. Early morning departures (6 AM to 8 AM) from Delhi tend to be cheaper and give you a full first day in Srinagar. If you depart at 6 AM, you can be having breakfast on a Dal Lake houseboat by 9 AM. Return fares as low as 3,000 are achievable for off-peak dates booked well in advance.
One practical note: Srinagar Airport occasionally experiences fog delays in winter, particularly in December and January. If you are travelling in winter, build a buffer day rather than booking a same-day connection. In summer and autumn, the route is highly reliable.
Option 2: Train to Jammu Tawi, Then Road to Srinagar — 8 + 5 Hours
This is the route that many experienced travellers choose not for budget reasons but for the journey itself. Take an overnight Rajdhani or Shatabdi from Delhi to Jammu Tawi (approximately 8 hours depending on the train), then travel by road from Jammu to Srinagar via the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44). The road journey is 5 to 6 hours in good conditions and takes you through Udhampur, Ramban, Banihal, and the Jawahar Tunnel before descending into the Kashmir Valley.
The recommended trains from Delhi to Jammu Tawi include the Jammu Rajdhani Express (22692, overnight, arrives Jammu early morning), the Uttar Sampark Kranti Express, and the Shalimar Express. Sleeper class fares start from around 400 rupees; AC 3-tier from 1,200 rupees. Book on IRCTC well in advance during peak months.
Road tip: Trivilio can arrange a private cab from Jammu to Srinagar for our guests. The drive through the Banihal pass and the moment you emerge from the Jawahar Tunnel into the Kashmir Valley is one of the most cinematic arrivals imaginable. If you have a flexible timeline, this combination is genuinely worth it.
The Jammu to Srinagar stretch on NH44 passes through Patnitop, a hill station worth a brief stop in summer. The road can be affected by landslides during heavy monsoon rain (July to August); always check highway status before travelling. Trivilio monitors road conditions for all our guests and will flag any disruption.
8 to 10 hours. Multiple daily departures. Overnight trains most convenient. Arrive Jammu early morning.
5 to 6 hours via NH44. Scenic mountain drive. Jawahar Tunnel entry to Kashmir Valley.
13 to 16 hours across two legs. Best done as overnight train plus daytime road drive.
Option 3: Road Trip from Delhi to Srinagar via NH44 — 18 to 20 Hours
The full road trip from Delhi to Srinagar covers approximately 870 kilometres and takes 18 to 20 hours of driving under good conditions, which almost never means a single continuous day. Most travellers doing this route spread it across two days, stopping overnight in Jammu or Udhampur. The route passes through Chandigarh, Pathankot, and Jammu before heading up into the mountains.
For first-time Kashmir visitors, I do not recommend the full road trip as your primary transport option. The mountain stretch from Jammu to Srinagar requires comfort with narrow Himalayan roads. However, for seasoned road trippers, groups with their own vehicles, or travellers who specifically want the overland experience, it can be unforgettable. The approach through the Pir Panjal Mountains in the early morning light is genuinely spectacular.
If you are doing the road trip: Plan to stop overnight in Jammu. Leave early morning from Jammu so you drive the mountain section in daylight. Avoid driving the Banihal section at night. Carry basic supplies and check the highway status (NH44 alert services are available) before departing. Never attempt this route during heavy snowfall months without proper vehicle preparation.
Best Seasons for a Kashmir Trip from Delhi
Delhi travellers have a particular relationship with Kashmir's seasonality because Delhi's own climate creates natural motivation windows throughout the year.
What Trivilio's Delhi Guests Consistently Love
Delhi is our single largest source city for guests. Over the years I have noticed particular patterns in what Delhi travellers respond to most strongly in Kashmir, and I think it comes down to contrast. Delhi is dense, fast, and loud. Kashmir's meadows and lakes are the opposite of everything the city offers. Here is what the Delhi guests in our care mention most often after they return.
- The silence. Specific guests have written to us saying they had forgotten what silence sounds like.
- The cold water of the Lidder River in Pahalgam -- "I sat with my feet in it for an hour".
- The quality of the Wazwan dinner we arrange -- the lamb Rogan Josh specifically draws comments every time.
- The Shikara ride at dawn, before the other tourists are awake, when Dal Lake is mirror-still.
- Gulmarg's open meadow -- "I felt like the whole mountain was mine".
- The houseboat breakfast: noon chai, girda bread, and butter from a local dairy.
These are not marketing observations. They are what people actually tell me when they message after returning. Delhi guests in particular respond to the decompression -- the physical and psychological distance from the capital that Kashmir provides, even though it is only one hour away by air.
Recommended Packages for Delhi Travellers
Because Delhi is so close to Srinagar, Delhi guests often have more flexibility with duration. A 4-day weekend trip is genuinely achievable for a Delhi family in a way it is not for guests flying from Chennai or Hyderabad. Here is how we structure it.
Dal Lake houseboat, Gulmarg gondola, Pahalgam meadows, Sonmarg day trip. The complete Kashmir circuit designed to fit a standard 8-day leave block.
Premium houseboat, private shikara rides at dawn, Pahalgam, Gulmarg meadow walks, candlelight Wazwan dinner. Built for couples who want genuinely romantic travel.
A compressed, efficient trip: Dal Lake, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam in 4 full days. Works as a long weekend from Delhi. Fly Friday morning, return Monday evening.
