Built Around Pace, Not a Checklist
We plan more family trips to Kashmir than any other type of package, and over the years we've learned exactly what makes them work and what makes them stressful. The number one thing: pace. Family trips in Kashmir should never feel rushed. Children need time to actually experience a place — to run on the meadow in Gulmarg, to splash at the edge of the Lidder River, to ride a shikara without being hurried off after fifteen minutes.
This package is built around that principle. Each day has a main activity but also built-in downtime. We use vehicles with enough space for bags and kids. We pick hotels that are family-friendly — proper family rooms, child menus, safe surroundings. We avoid narrow mountain roads in bad weather and always have a backup plan.
We've taken families with children as young as 2 and grandparents in their 80s on this itinerary. Both come back happy. That's the measure.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive in Srinagar. Transfer to your houseboat on Dal Lake — children almost always love the novelty of staying on the water. The houseboat owner will show the kids how to spot kingfishers and herons on the lake. Evening family shikara ride — these boats are wide and stable, perfect for families.
Mughal Gardens in the morning — Nishat Bagh has large open lawns where children can run freely, and the terraced water channels fascinate younger kids. Afternoon in the old city — the wooden architecture and busy bazaars are endlessly interesting for older children and adults. The floating market at the main Dal gate is a good stop with children.
This is almost always the highlight of a family Kashmir trip. Drive to Gulmarg. Pony rides for children around the meadow — the pony handlers are experienced and patient with young children. Gondola Phase 1 for the family — the views at the top are extraordinary and even small children are amazed by the scale. In winter months, snowplay and snowman building on the meadow.
Drive to Pahalgam. The Lidder River is a hit with children — the water is clean and clear, and in the shallower sections kids love standing in it (it's cold, which makes it more exciting). Betaab Valley in the morning, riverside lunch at a family-friendly dhaba. Afternoon at Aru Valley — wide and flat, easy for strollers and elderly family members.
Morning pony ride up to Baisaran meadow for the whole family — the pony operators here are particularly good with young children and have child-specific saddles. The meadow is a perfect picnic spot. Afternoon exploring Pahalgam old town and the handicraft market. Drive back to Srinagar in the evening.
Drive to Sonamarg. The road along the Sindh River is a highlight of any family trip — the river is spectacular, the road is good, and there are easy stopping points with views. Thajiwas Glacier by pony — a safe and easy route for families. Even in summer, children can stand on the glacier and throw snowballs. Return to Srinagar by evening.
Morning at leisure. Children often ask for one last shikara ride on the last morning — we try to arrange it if the timing allows. Transfer to Srinagar Airport or Railway Station. The family trip that becomes a memory the children will talk about for years.
