Short answer: pleasantly cool, not cold. Long answer: it depends on where you are and which week of October.
Is Kashmir Cold in October? What to Expect and What to Pack
Short answer: pleasantly cool in Srinagar, cold in the mountains, and genuinely worth it.
October is one of the two months our team recommends most — the other being April. The temperatures are comfortable, the chinar trees turn extraordinary shades of gold, the saffron fields near Pampore bloom purple for two weeks, and the summer crowds have thinned completely.
Here is the honest temperature breakdown.
October Temperatures in Kashmir — By Location
Srinagar (1,585 metres)
| Week | Daytime | Night | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st week (Oct 1-7) | 22-26°C | 10-14°C | Warm days, cool evenings. Light jacket at night. |
| 2nd week (Oct 8-15) | 18-23°C | 7-12°C | Comfortable days. Jacket after 6 PM. |
| 3rd week (Oct 16-22) | 15-20°C | 5-9°C | Chinar colour peaks. Crisp and clear. |
| 4th week (Oct 23-31) | 12-17°C | 3-7°C | Turning cold. Warm layer needed all day. |
Gulmarg (2,650 metres)
Gulmarg is consistently 8 to 10 degrees colder than Srinagar.
| Week | Daytime | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Early October | 12-16°C | 2-5°C |
| Mid-October | 8-12°C | -2 to 2°C |
| Late October | 4-8°C | -5 to -1°C |
Gulmarg in late October is cold. A down jacket is not optional. First snowfall on the upper slopes is possible in October.
Pahalgam (2,130 metres)
Between Srinagar and Gulmarg. Daytime highs of 15-20°C in early October, dropping to 10-15°C by month end. Nights 5-10°C early, 0-5°C late.
Week by Week: What October Actually Looks Like
First Two Weeks: The Best of Both Worlds
The valley is warm enough to be comfortable without heavy layers, the crowds of summer have gone, and the chinar trees are just beginning to turn. Hotel rooms are easier to get. Prices are often lower than peak summer.
This is arguably the best two-week window in the Kashmir calendar. The light is different in October — softer, lower in the sky, creating a golden hour that lasts three hours.
Third Week: Peak Chinar Season
Mid-October is when the chinar trees hit full colour. The trees in the Mughal gardens, along the Dal Lake boulevard, and around the historic sites turn from green to brilliant gold, amber and red. The photographs from this period look almost too beautiful to be real.
The saffron harvest in Pampore is also active in mid to late October. Purple crocus flowers bloom before dawn. Pickers work by hand in the cold morning air. We arrange dawn visits to the saffron fields as a special add-on for guests in Kashmir during this window.
Fourth Week: Turning Cold, Getting Quiet
The last week of October is cold but still beautiful. The colour is starting to fade from the trees. Hotels are very quiet. Prices are lowest. If you want Kashmir almost entirely to yourself, late October and early November is the window.
What to Pack for October Kashmir
Non-negotiable:
- A warm jacket (down or fleece-lined) — for evenings in Srinagar and all day in Gulmarg
- Layers underneath — the temperature difference between noon and 6 PM can be 12 degrees
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip — morning dew and fallen leaves make paths slippery
Useful:
- Light scarf or neck warmer — wind at altitude in October
- Sunscreen SPF 30 — the October sun is still strong at altitude
- A small umbrella or rain jacket — light rain occasionally in early October
Not needed:
- Heavy winter gear (that is December-January)
- Summer clothing (leave the shorts at home)
Why October is One of Our Favourite Months
We have been operating in Kashmir since 2014 and the October question comes up constantly. People are nervous it will be too cold. It is never too cold in October for someone who dresses appropriately.
What October delivers that no other month does:
- The single most beautiful natural display of the year (chinar colour)
- The saffron harvest — one of the most extraordinary agricultural sights in Asia
- Thin crowds — the summer visitors are gone, the winter skiers are not yet here
- The best photography light of the year
- Prices below peak summer
