Offbeat Kashmir: 6 Places That Require More Than a Day Trip

Gurez Valley

Bandipora district · 123 km · ILP required

Gurez sits 123 km north of Srinagar near the Line of Control, accessible only between late May and October when the Razdan Pass at 3,300 metres is clear. The valley is home to the Dard community — an ancient Indo-Aryan group who speak the Shina language and build elaborately carved wooden homes without nails. Dawar is the main town: about 6,000 people, a JKTDC bungalow, a handful of guesthouses, and the Kishanganga River running through the centre.

What Gurez offers that nowhere else in Kashmir does: a border valley that has never been touristed, a living traditional culture that has had no reason to adapt for visitors, and mountain scenery on a scale that puts even Sonmarg's best views in context. You will pass 5 to 6 security checkpoints between Bandipora and Dawar, which adds about 30 to 45 minutes to the drive. Doodhpathri

Budgam district · 42 km · No ILP

Doodhpathri is 42 km from Srinagar, which makes it one of the easiest offbeat additions to any Kashmir itinerary. It is a wide alpine meadow at 2,730 metres in Budgam district, with glacial streams crossing it — the name means Valley of Milk, from the white, fast-moving water over smooth stones. You can visit as a half-day trip, which means losing very little time from the rest of your schedule.

The right way to think about Doodhpathri: it is not Gulmarg without the gondola. It is a different landscape entirely — flatter, more pastoral, more likely to have shepherd camps in the meadow in summer. There is limited JKTDC accommodation for overnight stays, but most visitors come during the day and return. Pair it with Yusmarg, which is also in Budgam district, if you have a full day to use.

Yusmarg

Budgam district · 47 km · No ILP

Yusmarg is 47 km from Srinagar and one of the least-visited meadows in Kashmir given how close it is to the city. At 2,400 metres, it is ringed by deodar and pine, with the Doodhganga river running along one edge and the Pir Panjal range sitting behind it. There is almost no tourist infrastructure here — no gondola, no souvenir stalls, no ticket counter. That is the point.

The Nilnag Lake sits 5 km above the meadow, accessible by a moderate trek. The lake is fed by glacial meltwater and sits in a natural bowl carved during the Pleistocene. If you are combining Yusmarg with Doodhpathri — a sensible pairing since both are in Budgam district — do Yusmarg first in the morning and Doodhpathri on the return. Both are manageable in a single day without an early start.

Bangus Valley

Kupwara district · 140 km · No ILP

Bangus Valley sits at 2,800 metres in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir. It is a series of vast rolling alpine plateaus, not a single meadow — the scale reads more like parts of Norway than anything typical of the Kashmir tourist circuit. No gondola cables, no ticket counters, no hotels. Bakarwal nomads use the plateau as summer grazing land, and their camps dotted across the meadow in July and August are one of the best cultural encounters Kashmir offers.

This is the most logistically demanding day trip on this list. There is no accommodation in Bangus Valley — none at all. You either camp with full equipment or return to Handwara town or Kupwara for the night. The road requires a vehicle with high ground clearance, and the last section is unpaved. If you want to overnight in the area, Kupwara town has basic options worth booking in advance.

Lolab Valley

Kupwara district · 120 km · No ILP

Lolab Valley stretches about 40 kilometres through the Kupwara district, threaded by a river and containing around thirty villages of varying sizes. The valley floor is apple orchards, walnut groves, paddy fields, and agricultural land. The Kalaroos cave system — a network of natural limestone caves with an underground river — is the most unusual single attraction, mapped relatively recently and still not fully charted.

Lolab sees almost no tourists, which means you experience it entirely on its own terms. There are no facilities inside the valley for visitors — Kupwara town, the district headquarters, is where you base yourself. Pairing Lolab with a Gurez trip makes geographic sense since both are in the north. A logical sequence: Srinagar to Kupwara, Lolab Valley on day one, continue to Gurez the next morning via Bandipora.

Aharbal Waterfall

Kulgam district · 70 km · No ILP

Aharbal is Kashmir's largest and most powerful waterfall — the Vishaw River, sourced from Kousarnag Lake at 3,700 metres, drops 25 metres over a wide basalt ledge through dense pine forest. The "Niagara of Kashmir" name you will see on local signage is longstanding and not without reason. At peak snowmelt in June, the volume and spray are extraordinary, and the forest surrounding the falls keeps the area cool and shaded even in summer.

Aharbal works well as a South Kashmir day trip combined with Peer Ki Gali meadow on the Mughal Road, or as a natural extension of a Pahalgam stay — the two are 72 km apart. There is no accommodation at the falls themselves. Kulgam town is 12 km back, and Srinagar is a comfortable 2-hour drive. If you want to add a waterfall to a Kashmir itinerary without committing a full offbeat day, Aharbal is the most accessible option on this list.

Both are in Budgam district, both are 1.5 hrs from Srinagar, and both are manageable as a full-day loop. Do Yusmarg in the morning, Doodhpathri on the return. No overnight required.

Day 1: Srinagar to Kupwara, Lolab Valley. Night in Kupwara town. Day 2: Kupwara to Bandipora, onward to Gurez with ILP. Night in Dawar. Return on day 3. This is the most efficient way to cover both and makes geographic sense.

The 3-to-4 hour drive each way means Bangus is best done as a dedicated day from Srinagar or based from Kupwara. Trying to combine it with another destination in one day is not realistic.

Pair with Pahalgam or Peer Ki Gali meadow on the Mughal Road. Works as a half-day addition to a South Kashmir day. Srinagar is a comfortable 2-hour drive back.

Gurez and Aharbal are on opposite ends of the valley — over 6 hours apart by road. Do not plan a day that includes both. Choose north or south for each day of your itinerary.

A private vehicle with high ground clearance is required for most of these. Shared transport does not reach Gurez, Bangus, or Lolab. For Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, and Aharbal, a standard SUV or hatchback is sufficient.

Jio and Airtel are unreliable in north Kashmir and at high altitude. BSNL is the only network that functions in Gurez. Download offline maps — Google Maps or Maps.me — before you leave Srinagar for any of the northern destinations.

Basic and spread out. The nearest hospitals are in Bandipora for Gurez and Lolab, Handwara for Bangus, and Kulgam for Aharbal. Carry a basic first-aid kit and any regular medications. Do not rely on finding a pharmacy once you leave the main towns.
