About Tosamaidan
Tosamaidan is a place with a story. For fifty years — from 1964 to 2014 — this wide mountain meadow in Budgam district served as an army artillery firing range. Local communities lost access. The land was off-limits. Then in 2014, the range was decommissioned and the meadow was handed back to the people. What the army left behind was a landscape that had been untouched by development for half a century. The result is extraordinary. Tosamaidan is now one of the most pristine meadows in all of Kashmir — a wide, rolling grassland at 2,745 metres with wildflowers in July and August that cover every visible inch of ground. No hotels. No shops. No crowds. The nearby villages of Waterhail and Kanitar have some of the warmest people in the valley — communities who remember what the land looked like before, and who are proud to share it again. We take very few guests to Tosamaidan — perhaps fifteen to twenty per year. We want to keep it that way. A day here is one of the most peaceful experiences in Kashmir.
Things to Do
Best Time to Visit
Peak wildflower season. The meadow is at its most colourful in July. Days are warm and pleasant (18-22 degrees), nights cool enough for a jacket.
Flowers fading but the light is golden and the air is very clear. Fewer people even than summer.
Snow just melted, the first green appearing. A slightly muddy but deeply beautiful time to visit.
🚗 How to Reach Tosamaidan
From Srinagar, drive toward Charar-i-Sharif (45 km southwest), then continue on the local road toward Budgam district. Tosamaidan is approximately 55km from Srinagar. The last section of road is rough and a 4WD is strongly recommended. Our vehicles are equipped for this route.
