About Manasbal Lake
The Mughals called Manasbal the jewel of Kashmir lakes. Modern ornithologists call it one of the finest bird watching sites in South Asia. Our team calls it the most undervisited beautiful lake in the valley. Manasbal sits 30km north of Srinagar in Ganderbal district, at an altitude of 1,583 metres. It is the deepest lake in Kashmir — reaching 13 metres at its centre, with water so clear you can see the bottom. The lake is surrounded by three historical gardens: Jaroka, Rakh-i-Arth and Sadorbal — all Mughal period, all now peaceful and largely visitor-free. The lotus flowers that bloom across the lake surface from June to September are extraordinary — dense, pink, covering the shallower areas in a carpet of flowers. Egrets, kingfishers, pochards, cormorants and — in winter — migratory ducks fill the reeds around the shore. Fishing boats drift silently. The Jhelum river is not far. This is old, quiet Kashmir.
Things to Do
Best Time to Visit
The lotus bloom is the main event. Peak bloom is July-August. The combination of pink flowers, clear water and mountain backdrop is extraordinary and unlike anything else in Kashmir.
Migratory birds arrive from Siberia. The lake takes on a steel-grey quality. Very cold but atmospheric, and almost no tourists whatsoever.
The gardens are greening up and the birds are nesting. A peaceful time to visit before the summer visitors arrive.
🚗 How to Reach Manasbal Lake
Only 30km north of Srinagar on the Srinagar-Bandipora road — one of the easiest day trips in Kashmir, taking less than an hour. Can easily be combined with Wular Lake or the Watlab wetlands as a full day of lakes and birds.
