About Wular Lake
Wular Lake is 189 square kilometres. For context, Dal Lake is 18 square kilometres. Wular is bigger than some cities. It sits in Bandipora district north of Srinagar, fed by the Jhelum river, and at its peak it once covered nearly 400 square kilometres before decades of siltation reduced its size. The lake is a Ramsar Wetland — internationally recognised as a site of ecological importance. In the monsoon season, it is the dominant geographical feature of the Kashmir valley as seen from above. The middle of the lake contains Zaina Devi Lank island, with ancient ruins and a small seasonal market that the lake fishing communities use in summer. The fishing communities of Wular are remarkable — families who have lived on boats on the lake for generations, who know the water the way most people know the streets of their town. Wular is not a tourist destination. That is the point. Our guests who have been to Manasbal and Dal Lake often say Wular gives them the most raw, the most honest, the most unmediated sense of old Kashmir.
Things to Do
Best Time to Visit
The lake is at its fullest. The boat crossing is at its most dramatic. Lotus and aquatic plants cover the shallower areas. Most atmospheric time for photography.
Migratory birds arrive in vast numbers. The lake surface steams in cold mornings. A completely different and extraordinary experience.
The birds are nesting. The water is still full from winter rains. A quieter visit but rewarding for those who appreciate natural landscapes.
🚗 How to Reach Wular Lake
Drive north from Srinagar on the Srinagar-Sopore road (NH1) to Sopore, then turn toward Bandipora district. The lake shore at Watlab is approximately 60km from Srinagar. Can be combined with Manasbal Lake and Gurez Valley on a northern loop itinerary.
