About Kokernag
Kokernag is 80km from Srinagar and approximately zero kilometres from the attention it deserves. The word means "spring of the koka bird" in Kashmiri. A natural spring emerges here from the base of the Breng Valley mountains, creating the most voluminous cold spring in all of Kashmir — the water is so cold it never exceeds 7 degrees Celsius even in summer, and clear enough to see the streambed in detail. Around the spring, a botanical garden has been growing for decades. It now contains over 300 plant species from across the Himalayan region. In spring (March to May), the garden is a riot of tulips, roses, dahlias and Himalayan wildflowers. The trout farms of Kokernag are famous across Kashmir — fresh trout, cooked immediately in small restaurants at the garden edge, is some of the best food in the valley. The surrounding forest is old deodar and pine. The Breng River, fed by the spring, is a trout fishing stream. The whole place has a deeply pleasant, unhurried quality. Families come here for picnics on weekends, but outside weekends it is nearly empty.
