We get asked this constantly. Here is our honest answer — with specific day-by-day outlines for every duration so you can see exactly what you are trading off.
How Many Days Do You Need for Kashmir? (Honest Answer)
We get asked this constantly. People planning their holiday want a clear number. So here it is:
Minimum: 5 days. Ideal: 7 days. Best: 9 to 10 days.
Everything below that is a partial Kashmir. Everything above gives you depth and freedom. Here is exactly what each duration gets you.
3 Days in Kashmir — What You Actually See
Three days is Srinagar only. You can see Dal Lake, take a Shikara ride, visit the Mughal gardens, and walk through the old city. It is beautiful. But you have not seen Kashmir. You have seen its capital.
If someone tells you they did Kashmir in three days, they saw Srinagar and called it Kashmir. That is like visiting Connaught Place and saying you have seen India. Not wrong. Just incomplete.
Three days is fine if Srinagar is your specific destination — for a winter city break, a houseboat experience, or a quick escape. But if your goal is Kashmir the landscape, three days is not enough.
3-day sketch: Day 1 arrive, houseboat, Dal Lake evening. Day 2 Mughal gardens, old city. Day 3 morning Shikara, depart.
5 Days — The Minimum That Makes Sense
Five days lets you add one major destination beyond Srinagar. In our standard 5-day itinerary, that destination is Gulmarg.
Day 1: Arrive Srinagar. Houseboat or hotel. Evening Shikara. Day 2: Mughal gardens and old city of Srinagar. Day 3: Full day in Gulmarg — Gondola, meadows or skiing. Day 4: Pahalgam — Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, riverside picnic. Day 5: Sonamarg in the morning, depart from Srinagar.
This is a genuinely complete experience. You see three distinct landscapes. You are not rushing (much). The trade-off is that every day has a purpose and there is no room for a slow morning or an extra hour at a meadow.
Five days works for people who have limited leave and want to see Kashmir properly but efficiently.
7 Days — What We Recommend to Most People
Seven days is the sweet spot. It covers everything in the 5-day itinerary but adds breathing room.
Day 1: Arrive Srinagar. Houseboat check-in. Sunset Shikara. Day 2: Mughal gardens (early, before crowds). Old city afternoon. Day 3: Full day Gulmarg — Gondola Phase 1 and 2, meadow walks. Day 4: Drive to Pahalgam. Betaab Valley. Aru Valley. Day 5: Pahalgam leisure. Chandanwari snowfield. Riverside picnic. Day 6: Sonamarg — Thajiwas Glacier, Zero Point, Sindh River picnic. Day 7: Morning Shikara. Shopping in Srinagar. Depart.
The difference between 5 and 7 days is not two extra days of activity. It is the space to linger. To stay an extra hour in Aru Valley. To sit on the houseboat deck in the morning without rushing breakfast. Kashmir rewards slowness.
10 Days — The Full Picture
Ten days lets you go beyond the standard circuit into the places most tourists never reach.
Everything in the 7-day itinerary, plus:
- A day in the old city of Srinagar done properly — the sufi shrines, the craft workshops, a walk through the lanes near Nowhatta
- A visit to Pampore for the saffron fields (in October) or Wular Lake for the lotus flowers (June-September)
- An offbeat day in Tosamaidan, Naranag or Doodhpathri
- A relaxed final day rather than a rush to the airport
If you can take ten days, take ten days. You will come home having seen a Kashmir that most visitors do not find.
What Gets Cut at Each Duration
| Duration | What you see | What you miss |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | Srinagar only | Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg |
| 5 days | Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam brief | Proper Pahalgam, Sonamarg |
| 7 days | Full circuit, comfortable pace | Offbeat places, slow mornings |
| 10 days | Full circuit + offbeat + leisure | Nothing significant |
Our Team's Honest Recommendation
First-time visitor with 5 or 6 days of leave: Come for 5 days. Do the circuit efficiently. You will want to come back for longer — and most first-time guests do.
First-time visitor with flexibility: Take 7 days minimum. You will not regret it.
Returning visitor or someone who wants to go deeper: 9 to 10 days, with at least one offbeat destination.
The length of the trip is less important than the pace. We have seen guests do 10 days and rush every moment, and guests do 6 days and genuinely experience Kashmir. Let us know your dates and we will tell you honestly what works.
