Warwan Valley Itinerary — 3 to 5 Days in Kashmir's Most Remote Valley
Warwan Valley requires a plan. You cannot arrive and figure it out on the ground. There is no tourist office, no hotel booking platform, no signage. What there is — is extraordinary landscape, genuine community, and a quality of silence that most people have never experienced.
Here is how we structure a Warwan visit for the guests we take there.
Option 1: Three-Day Warwan — Road Entry via Kishtwar
This is the approach for guests who want to experience Warwan without a multi-day trek.
Day 1: Srinagar to Kishtwar (overnight)
Leave Srinagar early — by 7 AM. The route goes via the Banihal tunnel, through Ramban and Batote to Kishtwar. This takes approximately six to seven hours on a mountain highway. Kishtwar is a proper town — hotels, restaurants, good food. Overnight in Kishtwar.
Day 2: Kishtwar to Inshan to Warwan Valley
Leave Kishtwar by 8 AM. The road from Kishtwar to Inshan follows the Marusudar River through increasingly remote gorge country. This section takes four to five hours on a rough mountain track — high-clearance 4WD is essential. At Inshan, the road ends. From here, proceed on foot or horseback into the valley proper.
We arrange for horses and a local guide at Inshan through our contacts in the valley. The ride into the main valley settlements takes one to two hours depending on the destination. Overnight with a local family in the valley.
Day 3: Warwan Valley exploration and return
One full day in the valley — walking, visiting nearby settlements, sitting by the Marusudar River, meeting the community. Return by the same road to Kishtwar by late afternoon, drive back toward Srinagar (or stay another night in Kishtwar).
Option 2: Five-Day Warwan — Trek via Margan Pass
This is the classic Warwan traverse, which our trek lead Bilal leads personally. It is a more demanding but significantly more rewarding approach.
Day 1: Srinagar to Pahalgam
Drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam (2.5 hours). Overnight in Pahalgam. Brief orientation with Bilal on the route.
Day 2: Pahalgam to Margan Pass Base Camp
Leave Pahalgam on foot or horseback. The trail climbs steadily through pine forest and open meadow. By afternoon, you reach the base camp below the Margan Pass at approximately 3,400 metres. The first views of the pass appear above you. Camp here.
Day 3: Margan Pass (3,900m) and descent into Warwan
Cross the Margan Pass in the morning when the weather is most stable. The pass at 3,900 metres gives a view that justifies the entire journey — the Kashmir valley behind you, the inner Himalayan range ahead, and below, the beginning of Warwan. The descent into the valley is steep and dramatic. Camp in the upper Warwan by evening.
Day 4: Warwan Valley — Marusudar River, Villages, Community
A full day in the valley. Walk downstream through the settlements. Meet the families who live here year-round. The contrast with modern Kashmir — or modern anywhere — is immediate and total. No signal, no traffic, no tourist infrastructure. Just the river, the mountains, and people who have lived this way for generations.
Day 5: Lower Warwan to Inshan, drive to Kishtwar
Continue down the valley to Inshan where our vehicle meets the group. Drive to Kishtwar. Overnight in Kishtwar or continue toward Srinagar.
Practical Notes for Both Options
Accommodation in the valley: All accommodation in Warwan is homestay with local families. There are no hotels. The families provide basic but clean bedding and good food. Our team makes all arrangements through direct relationships — not booking platforms.
Food: Local Kashmiri and Gojri food — rice, lentils, flatbread, seasonal vegetables, butter tea. Vegetarians are well accommodated. Meat-eaters will eat well.
Fitness: For the road option, reasonable general fitness is sufficient. For the Margan Pass trek, you should be able to walk six to eight hours over uneven terrain at altitude.
What to bring: Full details provided on booking. The essentials are warm layers (temperatures drop sharply at night even in summer), good walking shoes, a sleeping bag liner, and water purification tablets.
Communication: No mobile signal for most of the valley. We carry a satellite communication device on all Warwan visits.
