Warwan Valley is one of the most remote inhabited places in the Kashmir region. Getting there is part of the experience — and it requires planning.
How to Reach Warwan Valley from Srinagar — Complete 2026 Guide
Warwan Valley is one of the most remote inhabited places in the Kashmir and Kishtwar region. The road ends at a village called Inshan. After that, you walk or go on horseback. Getting there requires commitment, planning, and a vehicle that can handle mountain roads that most city cars have no business being on.
Here is the complete, honest guide to reaching Warwan from Srinagar.
The Route: Srinagar to Kishtwar to Inshan
The journey to Warwan Valley from Srinagar typically goes in two stages:
Stage 1: Srinagar to Kishtwar Distance: approximately 230 kilometres Time: 6 to 7 hours depending on road conditions Route: Srinagar → Banihal tunnel → Ramban → Batote → Kishtwar
The Banihal tunnel has significantly reduced this journey compared to the older mountain road. The route through Ramban and Batote is a Himalayan mountain road — narrow, with hairpin bends and steep drops on one side. It is not for those who are uncomfortable with mountain driving.
Stage 2: Kishtwar to Inshan (Warwan Valley entry) Distance: approximately 90 kilometres Time: 4 to 5 hours on a rough mountain track Route: Kishtwar → Dachhan → Inshan
This second section is where the journey becomes serious. The road from Kishtwar into the inner valley is unpaved for much of its length. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is not optional — it is the minimum requirement. The road follows the Marusudar River through a gorge that narrows dramatically in places.
Total journey time from Srinagar to Inshan: approximately 10 to 12 hours
This means the journey requires at least one overnight stop, typically in Kishtwar, before continuing to the valley.
What the Road is Actually Like
The Kishtwar-to-Inshan section deserves its own description because it is unlike any road most visitors have experienced.
It follows the Marusudar River through increasingly narrow and dramatic gorge country. In monsoon season (July to August), landslides can temporarily block sections of the road. The river runs directly below the track in many places, and the road surface is loose gravel and rock.
Our driver for Warwan visits has made this journey over thirty times. He knows every challenging section, every rest point, every place where extra care is needed. We do not take guests to Warwan without an experienced driver who knows this specific road.
Permits
The Warwan Valley is not in a restricted zone requiring a special Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals. Foreign nationals should check the current status with us before planning — regulations can change and we always verify current requirements before any booking.
The Alternative: Going in Via Margan Pass (Trekking)
The classic approach to Warwan from the Kashmir valley side is via Margan Pass (3,900 metres), which connects Pahalgam to the head of Warwan Valley. This is a two-day trek from Pahalgam, crossing the pass and descending into the valley at its upper end.
Our trek lead Bilal uses this route regularly. It reverses the approach — you trek in from Pahalgam, traverse the valley over four to five days, and exit via road at Inshan toward Kishtwar.
What to Prepare
Vehicle: High-clearance 4WD. Non-negotiable. Driver: Someone who has done this road before. Our team handles this. Time: Minimum two days from Srinagar just for the journey in, plus days in the valley itself. Supplies: Basic supplies for the valley. Villages are self-sufficient but do not carry tourist provisions. Fitness: If you are trekking in any part of the valley, a reasonable level of fitness is required. The terrain is real mountain.
