Five days is tight but doable. Here is the route our team recommends — with the specific timings that make it work.
Kashmir in 5 Days — The Best Possible Itinerary
Five days is enough to see Kashmir's main highlights without feeling like you are rushing past everything. It is not enough to do it slowly. But it is enough to do it well.
Here is the exact itinerary our team recommends for five days, with the specific timings that make it work.
The 5-Day Kashmir Route
Day 1 — Arrival in Srinagar
Morning: Land at Srinagar Airport. Your driver meets you with a name sign. Transfer to your houseboat on Dal Lake (20 minutes from the airport).
Afternoon: Check in. This is the moment when most guests say they understand why people keep coming back to Kashmir. Sit on the houseboat deck. Let the lake settle around you.
Evening (5:00 PM): Private Shikara ride on Dal Lake — 90 minutes. The light at this hour is extraordinary. The mountains reflect in the still water.
Dinner: On the houseboat deck. Your cook prepares Kashmiri dishes. Rogan josh. Dum aloo. Kashmiri pulao. Eat slowly.
Stay: Srinagar houseboat
Day 2 — Srinagar City
7:30 AM: Nishat Bagh Mughal Garden — arrive before the crowds. The garden opens early and before 9 AM you have it almost to yourself. Twelve terraces, 400-year-old chinar trees, mountain reflections in the water channels.
9:30 AM: Shalimar Bagh — built by Emperor Jahangir. More intimate than Nishat. Your guide tells you the story of Nur Jahan.
11:00 AM: Old city of Srinagar. Jama Masjid (1402, 370 wooden columns). Shah-i-Hamdan shrine — papier-mache art covering every surface. The old bakeries near Nowhatta.
1:00 PM: Lunch at a local restaurant in the old city. Your guide knows the right place.
Afternoon: Free time. Optional: the floating vegetable market and lotus flowers by Shikara.
Evening: Second sunset Shikara ride or rest on the houseboat.
Stay: Srinagar houseboat
Day 3 — Gulmarg
7:30 AM: Leave Srinagar for Gulmarg. 90 minutes. The drive goes through apple orchards and pine forest.
9:30 AM: Gondola Phase 1 — your tickets are pre-booked (no queue). Rise to 3,748 metres.
10:30 AM: Gondola Phase 2 — rise to 4,267 metres. Nanga Parbat on the horizon. The most dramatic viewpoint in Kashmir.
12:30 PM: Lunch at a mountain restaurant at Phase 1 level. Views of the Pir Panjal range.
2:00 PM: Walk through the Gulmarg meadow (summer) or ski the lower slopes (winter). Take your time.
4:30 PM: Drive back to Srinagar or overnight in Gulmarg.
Stay: Gulmarg lodge or back in Srinagar (our recommendation is Gulmarg for atmosphere)
Day 4 — Pahalgam
8:00 AM: Drive from Srinagar (or Gulmarg) toward Pahalgam. 2.5 hours. The route follows the Lidder River through beautiful countryside.
10:30 AM: Betaab Valley — the wide meadow, the river, the pine forest. Named for the Bollywood film shot here. Busy but beautiful.
12:00 PM: Drive further to Aru Valley (12km from Betaab). Quieter, more remote. Gujjar nomads camp here in summer. The grass is ankle-deep.
1:00 PM: Riverside picnic lunch in Aru Valley — arranged by Trivilio. A proper setup. You eat by the river with pine forest on both sides.
3:30 PM: Chandanwari — the road end, a snowfield year-round. Powerful and quiet.
5:30 PM: Return to Srinagar or overnight in Pahalgam.
Stay: Pahalgam resort or return to Srinagar
Day 5 — Sonamarg and Departure
7:00 AM: Leave Srinagar for Sonamarg. 80km. 1.5 hours on the Srinagar-Leh highway through the Sindh Valley.
8:30 AM: Arrive Sonamarg. Thajiwas Glacier by foot or pony.
10:30 AM: Zero Point — accessible by road in summer. Views of four mountain ranges.
12:00 PM: Picnic lunch by the Sindh River.
1:30 PM: Drive back to Srinagar (1.5 hours).
3:30 PM: Airport. 5-day Kashmir done.
What This Itinerary Covers
Five days gives you: Dal Lake and houseboat culture, the Mughal garden heritage of Srinagar, the old city, Asia's highest ski gondola at 4,267 metres, three distinct Pahalgam valleys, a glacier at 3,000 metres, and a mountain river picnic.
It does not give you: slow mornings, offbeat destinations, the saffron fields of Pampore, the old bazaars of Srinagar done properly, or any of the more remote valleys.
For those things, you need 7 or 10 days. But for a first visit? Five days covers the essential Kashmir and leaves you wanting more. Which is, we think, exactly the right outcome.
Tips for Making 5 Days Work
Book everything in advance. With five days, you cannot afford a day wasted on logistics. Trivilio books all hotels, gondola tickets and activities before you arrive.
Do not skip the Shikara on arrival. It seems minor but it sets the mood for the entire trip.
Start days early. The best light and smallest crowds are before 9 AM at every attraction.
Stay in Gulmarg on night 3. The drive back to Srinagar and out again the next morning for Pahalgam wastes 2 hours you cannot afford.
