Most trekkers in Kashmir head for the Great Lakes or Tarsar Marsar. Choharnag is shorter, quieter, and for the right person, more rewarding.
Choharnag Trek Kashmir — A Hidden Alpine Lake Most Trekkers Miss
Most trekkers in Kashmir go for the Great Lakes — seven alpine lakes, eight days, India's finest multi-day trail. Or Tarsar Marsar, a five-day route from Pahalgam with its twin glacial lakes. These are excellent, well-known treks.
Choharnag is something different: shorter, quieter, less known, and for those who find it, genuinely surprising.
What Choharnag Is
Choharnag is a high-altitude alpine lake in the Budgam district of Kashmir, accessible on a one to two day trek from Yusmarg. The lake sits at approximately 3,700 metres in a granite bowl surrounded by peaks. The water is a deep, still blue-green. The surrounding meadows, in season, have wildflowers.
The name is Kashmiri and refers to the lake's location and characteristics. It is not a famous name in the mainstream trekking community, which is precisely why the trail to it is quiet.
The Route
The standard approach to Choharnag begins at Yusmarg, the meadow 47 kilometres from Srinagar in Budgam district. From Yusmarg, a trail climbs into the hills above the meadow through pine and fir forest before emerging into open alpine terrain.
Day 1: Yusmarg to high camp (approximately 5 to 7 hours walking). The trail gains significant altitude through forest and then meadow. Camp at a shepherd settlement or open meadow near the treeline.
Day 2: High camp to Choharnag Lake and return to Yusmarg (approximately 6 to 7 hours). The final climb to the lake is above the treeline — open rock and grass. The lake appears suddenly in a bowl below the ridge. Return the same way.
This can also be done as a long single day if you start very early from Yusmarg and are a strong walker — roughly 14 to 16 kilometres round trip with significant elevation gain.
Difficulty
Choharnag is a moderate trek. It is shorter and technically less demanding than the Great Lakes or Tarsar Marsar. However, the altitude — climbing to nearly 3,700 metres — means acclimatisation matters. Anyone doing this trek should spend at least one day at altitude in Yusmarg before starting.
For experienced trekkers, Choharnag is a straightforward route. For those with limited trekking experience who want to do something beyond a meadow walk, it is an excellent introduction to high-altitude trekking in Kashmir.
Best Time
June to August: The lake is free of ice from mid-June onward. The wildflowers in the meadows below the lake peak in July and August. This is the best general window.
September: The lake remains accessible. The wildflowers have faded but the light is extraordinary — that golden September quality that makes Kashmir photography exceptional. Fewer people on the trail.
What to Bring
- Warm layers — temperatures at the lake drop sharply even in summer
- Waterproof jacket — weather at altitude can change quickly
- Good hiking boots that are already broken in
- Water purification tablets
- Snacks and lunch — no facilities on the route
- A sleeping bag if doing overnight
