If the Great Lakes Trek is Kashmir's headline act, the Tarsar Marsar Trek is its best-kept secret. Starting from Aru Valley near Pahalgam, this route takes you to two stunning twin lakes -- Tarsar at 3,836 metres and Marsar at just over 4,000 metres -- connected by an ancient trail that Bakerwal shepherds have walked for centuries.
At 47 kilometres over five days, it is shorter and less physically demanding than the Great Lakes Trek, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in intimacy. You will see fewer trekkers on this route -- sometimes none at all. The meadows along the trail are dotted with shepherd camps, and the lakes themselves have a stillness and isolation that the more popular treks cannot match. There is something deeply peaceful about camping beside Marsar Lake knowing you might be the only group there that night.
This route is ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers who want to experience Kashmir's lake country without committing to an eight-day expedition. It is also excellent for experienced hikers who have already done the Great Lakes and want a different perspective on the same kind of landscape. Trivilio operates this trek throughout the season with experienced local guides who know every turn of the trail.
Trek Itinerary -- 5 Days
Day 1 -- Aru to Lidderwat (11 km)
The trek begins at the trailhead in Aru Valley, about 12 kilometres from Pahalgam. The first day is a gentle walk through meadows and pine forests along the Lidder River. The river is a constant companion -- you hear it before you see it, and the sound of water over rocks stays with you all day. The trail gains altitude gradually, and by the time you reach the Lidderwat campsite at 3,352 metres, you are well above the tree line with open views in every direction. The campsite sits in a wide meadow, and if you arrive before sunset, the light on the surrounding peaks is worth photographing.
Day 2 -- Lidderwat to Sekiwas (8 km)
A shorter day, which is deliberate -- it gives your body time to adjust to the altitude. The terrain becomes more dramatic as you ascend, with the valley narrowing and the peaks closing in. The Sekiwas meadow campsite offers excellent Himalayan views and is a good spot for wildlife -- marmots are common here, and you may see Himalayan griffon vultures circling overhead. The sense of remoteness deepens as you leave the forest behind.
Day 3 -- Sekiwas to Tarsar Lake (6 km)
The shortest day in distance but the most rewarding. The ascent to Tarsar Lake is steep in places, and you gain significant altitude in a short distance. But the moment you crest the ridge and see Tarsar Lake spread out below you -- deep blue water surrounded by bare rock and snow patches, with peaks reflected in the surface -- every step feels worth it. Camp is set up beside the lake. At golden hour, when the surrounding mountains turn amber and pink and the lake mirrors every colour, this is one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayas.
Day 4 -- Tarsar to Marsar (10 km)
Cross the ridge that separates the twin lakes. Marsar Lake sits at just over 4,000 metres and is more remote, less visited, and has a wilder quality than Tarsar. The water is darker, the surrounding terrain is more rugged, and the silence is absolute. You will likely have the lake mostly to yourself. Camp here for the night -- if the sky is clear, the stargazing is extraordinary at this altitude, with no light pollution for dozens of kilometres in any direction.
Day 5 -- Return via Homwas (12 km)
The descent follows the Homwas Valley route, which is different from the ascent path. This means you see new terrain on the way down rather than retracing your steps. The valley is lush and forested, a sharp contrast to the bare high-altitude terrain of the lakes. By the time you reach Aru and then Pahalgam, you have completed a full circuit through some of the finest mountain scenery in Kashmir. Most people are quiet on this last walk -- processing what they have just seen.
Cost, Inclusions and What to Bring
Trivilio runs this trek as a fully supported expedition. You carry a daypack with your personal essentials. Everything else -- tents, food, cooking equipment, heavier gear -- goes on mules. Here is what the package looks like and what you need to bring yourself.
Best Season and Weather
The Tarsar Marsar Trek is accessible from June through October, with the best conditions in July, August and September. June is colder and the higher sections may still have snow patches, but the wildflowers are beginning to bloom and the trails are empty. October brings early autumn colours and crisp air, but there is a higher risk of sudden weather changes above 3,800 metres.
July and August offer the most reliable weather -- warm days, cool nights, clear skies for photography, and meadows carpeted with wildflowers. September is our personal favourite for this trek. The crowds have thinned, the light has an autumn clarity that makes the lakes look impossibly blue, and the nights are cold enough to make the campfire feel essential rather than optional.
Insider tip from our team: If you are choosing between Tarsar Marsar and the Great Lakes Trek, think about what you want from the experience. The Great Lakes is grander in scale -- more lakes, higher passes, more days in the mountains. Tarsar Marsar is more intimate -- fewer people, a closer connection to the landscape, and a gentler pace that gives you time to actually sit by the lakes and absorb what you are seeing. Neither is better. They are different, and we love both.
Combining the Trek with Your Kashmir Trip
The Tarsar Marsar Trek fits naturally into a broader Kashmir itinerary. Most of our guests combine it with two or three days in Srinagar before the trek and a day in Pahalgam after it. The most popular combination is: two nights in Srinagar exploring the old city, Dal Lake and the Mughal gardens, followed by the five-day trek from Pahalgam, followed by a night back in Srinagar before flying home.
For those with more time, adding Gulmarg before or after the trek creates a nine to ten day itinerary that covers the best of Kashmir -- culture, lakes, mountains and adventure. Trivilio builds these combined itineraries regularly, and the logistics flow smoothly because we handle all the transport, accommodation and transitions between destinations.
