Kashmir's cafe scene is small, honest, and occasionally brilliant. Here is where to actually go — from a riverside spot in Pahalgam to the best noon chai in Srinagar.
Kashmir is not a coffee city the way Bangalore or Istanbul is. The cafe culture here is quieter, more local, and a little harder to find if you don't know where to look. But there are genuinely good spots — places worth sitting in for an hour, not just stopping at for a photograph. This guide covers the ones worth your time, listed by area, with honest notes on what makes each one worth a visit.
Most of the good cafes in Srinagar are in the Dal Lake corridor and along M.A. Road. Pahalgam has one riverside spot that is genuinely lovely. And if you are in Gulmarg or want a considered last evening in Srinagar, there are hotel lounges worth knowing about — the views do most of the work.
Srinagar — Dal Lake
Barista Boulevard
This is the one to go to if you want to sit with a coffee and watch Dal Lake do its thing. The window seats look directly over the water — you get the mountains in the background, shikaras moving across the lake, and on clear afternoons, a reflection that looks almost implausible. It is a standard Barista menu, nothing unusual, but the coffee is consistent and the setting is hard to beat. The cafe is proper, clean, and air-conditioned, which matters on hot summer afternoons.
Late afternoon, between 4 and 6pm. The light falls on the water well at this hour and the lake is usually at its calmest. Window seats fill quickly after noon — arrive a little early if you want one.
Order: Any espresso drink. The menu is standard Barista, so stick to what you know and let the view do the rest.
Le Delice
Le Delice is small and easy to miss, but the croissants are genuinely good — properly laminated, not the bread-roll version you get at most Indian bakeries. The space is cozy and slightly elegant without trying too hard. They do tarts, other baked goods, and solid coffee, and the whole place has the feel of a neighborhood bakery that happened to find itself beside one of Asia's most beautiful lakes. It fills up quickly on weekend mornings.
Before 11am. The pastries are freshest, the cafe is quieter, and you can actually get a seat without competing for it. The best bakes tend to sell out fast.
Order: Croissant and a flat white. Ask what tarts they have that day — they are worth adding if anything is left.
Srinagar — M.A. Road
Cafe Liberty
Cafe Liberty is where Srinagar's local crowd actually goes. It has a retro aesthetic — vintage details, warm lighting, the kind of spot that was cool before it knew it was cool. The menu is simple: black coffee, a house brew, and a few things to eat. It draws a mix of young professionals, university students, and solo travelers passing through. There is no lake view here, no postcard setting — just a good cafe doing what a good cafe should do.
Mid-morning or late afternoon when the local crowd settles in. Avoid peak lunch hour if you want a seat without waiting.
Order: Black coffee or the house brew. The simpler drinks are the stronger suit here — skip anything complicated.
Srinagar — Jhelum
Chai Jai
Chai Jai is the kind of place you find through a recommendation rather than a sign — it sits on the Jhelum River bunds and does not advertise itself loudly. It does one thing exceptionally well: noon chai. The color is correct, the body is right, and it is salted properly without being overpowering. They also serve makki roti and harissa, and if you have the patience to wait for the harissa to be prepared correctly, it is worth every minute.
Morning is when Chai Jai is at its best. The Jhelum bunds have a particular quiet before the city wakes up fully, and noon chai is, by nature, a morning drink.
Order: Noon chai first, always. If you are there for breakfast, add harissa and makki roti — but ask how long the harissa will take before ordering so you are not surprised by the wait.
Pahalgam
Cafe Willow Heevan
Pahalgam is not a coffee town, and Cafe Willow Heevan is not trying to be something it is not. It has wooden interiors, warm amber tones, and it sits right on the banks of the Lidder River — which means if you get a window or deck seat, you are watching a glacier-fed river move through pine forest while your drink cools. They serve warm drinks, comfort food, and light meals, all solidly done. Open reliably from April through October.
Morning for the mist sitting on the river, or late afternoon when the light goes golden on the water. The deck gets cold early in the morning — bring a layer if you want to sit outside before 9am.
Order: Kahwa or any warm drink. The comfort food is reliable if you are coming back from a hike and need something substantial.
Hotel Lounges Worth Visiting
These are not independent cafes — they are hotel lounges that happen to be worth the visit whether or not you are staying. The views alone justify the cost of a coffee.
The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa
The Khyber is one of the best-positioned properties in Kashmir — floor-to-ceiling windows that face the Gulmarg meadow directly. In summer the meadow is covered in wildflowers, in winter it sits under several feet of snow. You do not need to be a guest to stop in for coffee or afternoon tea. The service is what you would expect at this level. It is not a quirky independent spot, but when the view outside is doing what it does here, that is beside the point.
Mid-morning between activities, or late afternoon when the low light hits the meadow. In winter, post-skiing is the natural moment — you will not want to leave in a hurry.
Order: Coffee and whatever they are serving for afternoon tea. In winter, ask for their warm drinks menu.
Taj Dal View
The Taj Dal View sits at an elevated position directly facing Dal Lake, and the afternoon tea or evening drinks experience here is one of the better ways to mark a final evening in Srinagar. It is not cheap, and it is not the kind of place you drop into casually. But if you want to end a Kashmir trip with something considered — not rushed, not tourist-package — this does it. Plan it as the last thing you do before leaving the city.
4 to 6pm is the window. The lake light at this hour, viewed from an elevated position, is what makes the visit worthwhile.
Order: Afternoon tea set or an evening drink — treat it as a deliberate experience, not a quick coffee stop.
Practical Notes
- Peak season for all cafes listed here is April through October. Some Pahalgam spots close outside this window — confirm before visiting in winter.
- The quietest window in Srinagar is between 10am and noon. If you want to avoid crowds at Dal Lake cafes, this is the time.
- Chai Jai and some Jhelum bund spots are not straightforward to find on maps. Ask your hotel or guesthouse to direct you, or ask a local who actually lives in the city.
- Carry cash for the smaller independent cafes. Cards are accepted at Barista Boulevard, Le Delice, and the hotel lounges, but not reliably everywhere else.
- Tipping is not widely practiced in Kashmir's cafe culture, but it is appreciated. A small gesture goes a long way at places where the staff are clearly making the real effort.
Kahwa vs Noon Chai: The Two Teas of Kashmir
If you are spending time in Kashmir, you will encounter two very different teas. Kahwa is the lighter of the two — green tea brewed with saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, and sometimes crushed almond slivers. It is what most guesthouses and houseboats serve on arrival, and it is genuinely warming without being heavy. Noon chai (also called sheer chai or pink tea) is something else entirely — salted, made with a special Kashmiri process using baking soda that turns the tea a dusty pink, and served with milk. The flavor is savory, slightly smoky, and completely unlike anything you would expect from something that looks pink.
Most visitors either love noon chai immediately or need a few sips to get there. Chai Jai on the Jhelum bunds does the best version you will find in a cafe setting. For kahwa, houseboats on Dal Lake usually serve a perfectly good cup — better, in most cases, than anything you will get at a standalone cafe.
