The most-visited spots in Kashmir — Dal Lake, Gulmarg Gondola, Betaab Valley — are famous for good reason. But Kashmir's extraordinary diversity means there are dozens of locations that see a fraction of those visitors, with scenery and experiences that rival or exceed the famous spots.

This guide is built from Trivilio's 10+ years of exploring the Valley. These are places we take guests who ask for something different — and where the reaction is consistently one of wonder.

The 10 Best Offbeat Kashmir Destinations

11. Gurez Valley

One of the most stunning valleys in Kashmir — green meadows, the roaring Kishanganga River, traditional wooden Dard houses, and virtually no tourists. Requires an Inner Line Permit (Trivilio arranges).

22. Bangus Valley

A vast alpine meadow near Handwara that exploded on Instagram in 2022–23 but remains uncrowded. Rolling green hills, no development, extraordinary peace.

33. Doodhpathri

The 'Valley of Milk' — 42 km from Srinagar. Glacial streams, lush meadows, pine forests. A perfect day trip that most Srinagar tourists miss completely.

44. Lolab Valley

Called 'the Valley of Streams and Meadows' — in Kupwara district. Trout streams, walnut groves, traditional Kashmiri villages. Completely untouched.

55. Sinthan Top

A 3,748m mountain pass with panoramic views of the Great Himalayas. Snow-covered until June. The connecting route from Kashmir to Kishtwar. Zero crowds.

66. Wular Lake

Asia's largest freshwater lake — 200 sq km of migratory birds, lotus flowers and fishing communities. Only 60 km from Srinagar but rarely visited by tourists.

77. Yusmarg

Meadow of Jesus — a pristine alpine meadow at 2,730m surrounded by pine forests. Perfect for picnics, short treks and pony rides. 47 km from Srinagar.

88. Naranag

Ancient 8th-century Hindu temple ruins in a stunning forested valley. Also the exit point for the Great Lakes Trek. Archaeological significance and natural beauty combined.

99. Chattergul

A remote valley in Anantnag district with dramatic gorges, waterfalls and forest trails. Known only to local trekkers and wildlife photographers.

1010. Drung Waterfall

A spectacular waterfall 30 km from Gulmarg, accessible on the way to Tangmarg. Most Gulmarg visitors drive past without knowing it exists.

How to Visit Offbeat Kashmir

Most offbeat locations require: (1) A dedicated vehicle rather than shared transport; (2) A knowledgeable local guide who knows the routes; (3) Some flexibility on dates as access can be weather-dependent; (4) For border-adjacent areas like Gurez — an Inner Line Permit.

Trivilio specialises in custom off-beat itineraries. Tell us what kind of experience you want — remote meadows, hidden temples, photographer's landscapes — and we'll design a trip that 95% of Kashmir visitors will never have.
