This is the most searched and least honestly answered question about Kashmir. Most travel websites either avoid it entirely or give vague diplomatic answers. At Trivilio, we've operated in Srinagar since 2014 and have sent over 12,000 guests across the Valley — including solo female travellers from Europe, families from the USA, honeymooners from Australia, and photographers from Japan.

Our honest answer: Kashmir is safe for tourists in 2026, with the same caveats that apply to any destination in the world. Below we break down exactly what you need to know.

The Straightforward Answer

✅ Kashmir's main tourist areas — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and the routes between them — are safe for tourists. The Indian Army and CRPF maintain a visible security presence throughout the Valley. The tourism infrastructure (hotels, transport, guides) operates normally year-round.

The security situation has significantly improved since 2019. Tourist footfall has broken records in 2022, 2023, and 2024. In 2023 alone, Kashmir received over 2 million tourists — more than any year in recent history.

Where is Completely Safe

1✅ Srinagar

Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens, Lal Chowk, Old City — all routinely visited by domestic and international tourists. Busy, safe, with good infrastructure.

2✅ Gulmarg

Pure tourist town. No political activity. Peaceful mountain resort. Well patrolled. Thousands of skiers and trekkers every month.

3✅ Pahalgam

Betaab Valley, Aru, Chandanwari — all safe tourist zones. High Army presence due to Amarnath Yatra route.

4✅ Sonamarg

Meadow of Gold — completely peaceful. Military presence on Zoji La route but no tourist incidents.

What to Be Aware Of

1Internet Shutdowns

Occasional mobile internet shutdowns (rare, unpredictable, hours-long). Always carry offline maps (Google Maps offline, Maps.me). Hotel WiFi usually works.

2Hartals (Strike Days)

Very occasional local strike days can close some shops in Srinagar Old City. Your guide/hotel will know in advance — easy to plan around.

3Remote Border Areas

Areas very close to the Line of Control (some parts of Gurez Valley, Keran Valley) require Inner Line Permits and are not recommended without a local guide. Trivilio arranges permits.

4Travel Insurance

Buy comprehensive travel insurance before visiting Kashmir — this is standard advice for any mountain destination globally.

What Our Guests Say

"We were nervous before going, having read mixed things online. But from the moment we landed, we felt completely safe. Our Trivilio guide was excellent and we never felt any tension. Kashmir is extraordinarily beautiful and the people are incredibly warm." — Sarah, UK (October 2024)

"I'm a solo female traveller from Germany and I spent 10 days in Kashmir. Srinagar felt as safe as any European city. The houseboat owners, the shikara men, everyone was genuinely kind. I'm already planning my return." — Julia, Germany (April 2024)

"As Americans, we'd read some alarming things. The reality was nothing like that. Gulmarg was full of families, the guides were professional and everything ran smoothly. Can't recommend it enough." — The Peterson Family, USA (July 2023)
